Portuguese coach José Mourinho, from Roma, lost on Wednesday his 100% winning record in European club finals, when he fell to the Spanish of Sevilla in the final of the Europa League soccer.

In Budapest, Hungary, and in front of more than 60 thousand fans, the Portuguese coach failed to win the second European trophy in a row at the service of the ‘romanistas’, and the sixth in total, losing his unbeaten record in the finals of European competitions, in which, for the rest, he had only conceded goals in the first.

The ‘executioner’ was the team Sevilla, who are the record holders of trophies in the second UEFA competition, reaching today the seven titles conquered, in 2006, 20007, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020 and now 2023, the first two still in the UEFA Cup format and the last five already as the Europa League.

Roma, which has Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patrício, played in the second consecutive European final, one year after having won the first edition of the Europa Conference League, with the 60-year-old Portu-guese coach leading the Italian capital to its second European trophy in its history, after triumphing in the 1960/61 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

On Wednesday it was Sevilla’s win ‘inevitability’ that prevailed, after a 1-1 draw in regulation time and extra time, with a shootout for penalties in which José Luis Mendibilibar’s team was beyond reproach, scoring four in four against one in three of Italians.

It was the second time in his career that Mourinho played in European finals in consecutive seasons, after having done so for the first time in 2002/03 and 2003/04, then with FC Porto.
