The Essex County Sheriff’s Office celebrates promotions and new hires

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office celebrated promotions and new hires at a ceremony held on Tuesday, March 22nd. 

At the ceremony, Sheriff Armando Fontoura promoted another Luso-Americano to his ranks.  Lieutenant Eduardo Carvalho was promoted to Captain.

Captain Eduardo Carvalho has spent the last 16 years as a law enforcement officer with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.  He is a resident of the Ironbound section of Newark and has always been passionate in keeping the citizens of our community safe and secure.

Captain Carvalho graduated from Oliver Street School and East Side High School with honors.  He then joined the United States Army where he served for 4 years. 

In addition, Sheriff Fontoura swore in 31 new Sheriff’s Officers to the Department.  Among those, another Luso-American and longtime Ironbound resident Sheriff’s Officer Vanessa Marques.

Officer Marques’ parents immigrated from Porto and Leiria, respectively where they settled in the Ironbound to raise their family.  Officer Marques attended St. Lucy’s Philippian Academy (old St. James), Wilson Avenue and graduated from East Side High School in 2006. 

Officer Marques also received an Associate’s Degree from Union County College.
