Portugal’s wine region Reguengos de Monsaraz selected 2015 European Wine City
Reguengos de Monsaraz is the wine region selected to be 2015 European Wine City. Throughout next year the municipality in the Alentejo province of Portugal will organize a series of activities, connected to its wine culture. Some of the scheduled initiatives include a congress on vineyards and wine, and various cultural visits.
The European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN) met in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and selected Reguengos de Monsaraz as the 2015 European Wine City. Portugal was the selected destination to host the initiatives in which three wine regions had applied, namely Reguengos de Monsaraz, Bairrada (Municipality of Cantanhede) and Vinhos Verdes Alvarinho (Municipalities of Monção and Melgaço).
The European Wine City initiative is a partnership between the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities (AMPV) and the RECEVIN, with the intent to “promote the wines and the regions.”
The contest aims to annually distinguish a city that symbolizes European wine development. The contest operates on a rotating basis amongst the countries who make up the European network. In Portugal, Palmela had this distinction in 2012.
Reguengos de Monsaraz will host an award ceremony in February, 2015.
