Pride and patriotism at the Portugal Day Parade in Newark, N.J.
Portugal Day was once again celebrated in Newark with the usual parade filling Ferry Street with true patriotic fervor.
Sunday, despite the threat of rain, allowed dozens of Portuguese and Portuguese-American associations to take to the streets, demonstrating their patriotism and pride in their roots.
Among the Portuguese and American figures present were Mayor Ras Baraka, the Consul General of Portugal in Newark Pedro Monteiro, State Deputy Eliana Pintor-Marín, Sheriff Armando Fontoura, Council General Luís Quintana and, representing the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation, Maria Coutinho and Albert Coutinho.
This year, journalist Luís Pires had the honor of being Grand Marshal of the parade.
The parade, bringing together not only groups from Newark but from several Portuguese communities in the state, was once again a showcase of the best that Portugal has to offer to America: culture and traditions. And, of course, there was no lack of folklore, music, flags, the colorful floats, banners and the smile of a people who, even when embracing the host country, have their hearts always planted on both sides of the Atlantic.
