Governor Murphy designates June 10th as “Portugal Day” in New Jersey



A resolution sponsored by Assemblymembers Eliana Pintor Marin, Shanique Speight, Eric Houghtaling, Joann Downey, and Senators Teresa Ruiz and Vin Gopal, on June 7 was signed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy designating June 10th as “Portugal Day” in New Jersey.

On June 10, the Portuguese commemorate Portugal, Luís Vaz de Camões, and the Portuguese Communities spread around the world. Camões is considered Portugal’s and the Portuguese language greatest poet, and his mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Homer, and Virgil, among many others. He was born c. 1524 or 1525 and died on June 10, 1580.
