NYC: Tavern on the Green in Central Park to host Portuguese fado night with Sandy Batista
On Friday, October 17, the iconic Central Park, New York, restaurant Tavern on the Green, will host the Portuguese fado singer Sandy Batista. The event will take place from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm in the spacious and plush Bar Room.
Rhode Island native Sandy Batista is bringing the Portuguese folk tradition to Manhattan. Characterized by deeply emotional performances, Fado is performed with one fadista (vocalist) accompanied by the Portuguese 12-string guitarra and a classic guitar. The fadista, draped in black, sings solemn songs surrounding the theme of ‘saudade,’ meaning nostalgia or melancholia. The whole experience is designed to emotionally move spectators, with many fadistas judging the success of their performances by the number of teary eyes at the end of a song. Fado, heard frequently on the streets of Lisbon, Portugal, will make next Friday’s performance a special treat for New Yorkers.
