Residents protest Newark Energy Center permit changes at a public hearing
Over 80 Newark residents and others recently attended a public hearing with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) at Newark City Hall. Over 30 speakers gave comments, objecting to the major changes for the Newark Energy Center. The plant, formerly known as and owned by Hess, was approved previously by the Newark Planning Board and City Council, State NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Hess was bought out by Energy Investors Fund, and the new owners want permission to use a process for their cooling tower that involves using up to 4 times as many toxic chemicals to be stored on the site.
