Sport Club Português marks its 101st anniversary with pride and gratitude
In a display of elegance and gratitude, directors, members, and friends of the oldest Portuguese club in New Jersey got together to remember with joy and pride this old and beautiful club that they hold so dear to their hearts.
A year ago the club had just celebrated an unforgettable 100th anniversary and its admirers were there to make sure the club would not be forgotten.
The main hall was filled with guests old and young, from all walks of life.
The Portuguese Ambassador from Washington visited and addressed the crowd with a stirring, patriotic speech.
President Helena Vinhas in her welcome address, reminded everyone of the clubs history and achievements. The clubs “rancho folclórico” put on a brilliant display of their folk dance performance skills.
The Sport Club Português (S.C.P.) was founded in 1921 and its beautiful art deco style building was inaugurated on December 7, 1941. Over the years the SCP has become the symbol and hallmark of Portuguese culture, history and traditions being kept alive and maintained in our community.
