The 600th anniversary of Madeira Island



On Monday July 1st the President of Portugal officially commemorated the 600 years since the discovery of Madeira Island in 1419 by the Portuguese explorers João Gonçalves Zarco/

Madeira and the smaller island of Porto Santo were discovered uninhabited by Portuguese navigators between 1419 and 1425.

Prince Henry the Navigator was first responsible for the settlement and early colonization of these islands.

In a statement published on his official site, the president greeted the people of the autonomous region of Madeira on a date that also commemorates their values and traditions.
