Mariza, Pedro Abrunhosa at the celebrations of 70 years of Portuguese Immigration to Canada

Singers Mariza, Pedro Abrunhosa and Bárbara Bandeira are included in the celebrations of 70 years of Official Portuguese Immigration to Canada, the organization announced.

According to the Organizing Committee, the program of celebrations will last for a year in honor of the pioneers who arrived at the ‘Pier 21’ dock in Halifax, Canada, on May 13, 1953.

The celebrations on May 13th and 14th “will feature several groups and artists, including Mariza, Pedro Abrunhosa and Bárbara Bandeira”, will also be recognized and included in the Walk of Fame Luso-Canadians who make a difference, in view of the future Magellan Centre, the first home exclusively for the elderly in Portugal”, stresses the press release.

Funds raised will go to the Magellan Community Foundation.

Centro Magalhães will be the first long-term care home for Portuguese-speaking elderly people, with 350 beds, will provide social housing for the community and will also be a social gathering center for the community.

“For the first time, the Portuguese community will welcome the public in the Toronto City Hall square, Nathan Phillips Square, sharing a gastronomic, cultural and musical experience for people over 19 years old. These weekend celebrations will have the confirmed presence of officials from the Government of Portugal, from the Regional Government of the Azores, and a delegation from the Canadian Government to be announced”, added the organization.

Several members of the community are part of the commission, including businessman Manuel da Costa, Anabela Tabor-da, Angie Câmara, Bela Cumberbatch, Bernardino Ferreira, Bon Falcone, Jorge Ribeiro, Maria João Dodman, Matthew Cor-reia and Tânia Barbosa.

The Commission will continue to organize events throughout the year to mark the celebrations of 70 years of Official Portuguese Immigration to Canada.

Portuguese associations in Canada are also being encouraged to organize events to mark the anniversary, before or after the 13th and 14th of May, with more information available on the website 70anoscanada.com.
