East Ward election set for second round
Four candidates, Anthony Campos, Michael Silva, Johnathan Seabra, and Louis Weber, were originally running on May 10 for the city council seat of retiring, longstanding city councilman, Augusto Amador. However, last week’s election for city council for Newark’s East Ward showed no clear victory. With none of the candidates reaching the required number, the East Ward will have the chance to vote again, in a “runoff” election.
A “runoff “election is usually held between the top two candidates of the first round approximately one month later, in order to give the candidates time to campaign further. In the East Ward, candidates Anthony Campos and Michael Silva are the two top vote-getters.
Among the four candidates, Michael Silva received 1,039 votes (roughly 36%), while. in close second, Anthony Campos received 989 votes, roughly 34%. The other candidates Johnathan Seabra and Louis Weber received 15% and 14% of votes, respectively.
Of note, the East Ward election, as a whole, experienced the lowest voter turnout of the the entire city of Newark. Only around 11.5% percent of registered voters particpated in the election.
Both Campos and Silva are confident heading into the encroaching June 14 election day.
“ With just under a month to go both will devote their time to increased community outreach and engagement.
