Newark celebrates Portuguese traditions with Fado and Folklore Night

On Friday, March 13th, Newark hosted a “Night of Fado and Folklore” at the Our Lady of Fátima Church hall, part of the city’s Portugal Day celebrations. The event featured traditional folklore performances by the Rancho da Casa dos Arcos de Newark, followed by a guitarrada performance by Francisco Chuva and Pedro da Silva.

Juliana Vitor, Pedro Botas, and Elison da Silva also performed Fado songs, honoring one of Portugal’s most famous music genres. Fernando Grilo, President of the Portugal Day Committee, thanked participants and acknowledged three honorees for the 2026 Portugal Day celebrations: Jorge Ventura (Luso-American of the Year), João Rendeiro (Lifetime Achievement Award), and Carlos Farinhas (Grand Marshal).

The celebrations will continue on April 30th with the Portugal Day Gala.
