Newark’s Mayoral Race – Ras Baraka wins his third term

Ras Baraka declared victory Tuesday night in his bid for a third term as Newark mayor over challenger Sheila Montague in the city’s nonpartisan municipal elections.

“There is a lot of work that’s been happening in this city, and I’m just thankful to take another four years to continue what we’ve been doing,” Baraka told a crowd of supporters at the Prudential Center arena, where he was joined by his Team Baraka slate for an election night celebration.

The heavily favored mayoral incumbent dominated the race receiving more than 80% of the vote.

Although the mayor handily secured a win in his race for another four-year term, he noted that it will be up to voters to turn out again in June to decide several key council ward races headed to runoffs.

“We may have some more work to do,” Baraka told his supporters.
